A portrait of 81-year-old Masa at her home in Bududa, Uganda. She began supporting mothers to give birth in the villages of Bududa District 40 years ago when her daughter in-law was forced to give birth in the middle of the night in the Elgon mountains in Eastern Uganda. In 2010, the government banned the practice of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), but did little to improve modern maternal health services in rural areas of Uganda. Masa now refers her patients to the health facility in Bushiika town, Bududa District, Uganda.
